Illinois Pharmacy Tech Requirements

The easiest way to be licensed in Illinois…
- Prepare for and pass the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE)
- Obtain employment as a Pharmacy Technician
- Complete employer’s onboarding program (and have your PIC complete the required documentation).
- Complete a Certified Pharmacy Technician application ($40)
Illinois State Specific Requirements:
- You must be at least 18 years old
- You must have a high school diploma or GED
- Illinois does not require any additional education during 2 year re-certification cycle, however, they do require a $25 renewal fee be paid before the expiration date of the license
Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) Requirements:
Pathway 1: A PTCB-Recognized Education/Training Program
Pathway 2: A minimum of 500 hours of work experience as a pharmacy technician.
- Full disclosure of all criminal and State Board of Pharmacy registration or licensure actions
- Compliance with all applicable PTCB Certification policies
- Study and pass the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE)
- Complete the application process at PTCB.org and include, as part of the application process, pay the exam fee of $129
Pharmacy Technician Certification Board Continuing Education Requirements:
- Obtain 20 hours of Continuing Education (CE) during 2 year re-certification cycle
- 1 hour must be in Pharmacy Law, 1 hour must be in Patient Safety
- All Continuing Education must be Tech-Specific
- The PTCB Re-certification Fee is $40 and is payable to the PTCB every 2 years
