Preparing for the PTCE in 2026?

This complete guide shows you exactly how to study, what’s on the exam, what’s changed, how scoring works, and how we updated our PTCB-Recognize Course for 2026. Whether this is your first attempt or a retake, you’ll learn how to build a study plan that leads to a passing score.

Over the last year we developed and added 12 webinars and hundreds of practice questions to address the changes to the PTCE, completely overhauling our Pharmacology and Inventory content. Additional webinars were added on drug diversion, MTMs, and Pharmacy Administration.

What Is the PTCE?

The Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE) is the national certification exam required by most employers and accepted by the majority of state boards for licensing. Passing the PTCE earns you the CPhT credential.

The exam includes:

  • 90 multiple-choice questions
  • It’s a timed 1 hour 50 minute assessment
  • 80 scored questions + 10 unscored
  • Covers Medications, Federal Law, Calculations, Safety, and Workflow
  • Offered at Pearson Vue Testing Centers or through Online Delivery

What changed on the 2026 PTCE?

  1. Medications – 35% (-5%)
  2. Federal Laws & Regulations – 18.75% (+6%)
  3. Patient Safety & Quality Assurance – 23.75% (-2%)
  4. Order Entry & Processing – 22.5% (+1%)

Each domain includes specific knowledge areas in the PTCB blueprint. The most difficult domain on the 2025 exam (by far) was medications, so pass rates may improve with less emphasis on that domain. “Alligation” calculations and knowledge of Narrow Therapeutic Index Medications have been removed from the 2026 PTCE version. The other massive change is that Compounding is no longer tested on the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam. This makes sense as Compounding is covered in many the PTCB’s Assessment Based Certificates

How long does it take to study for the PTCE?

Everyone is different. We’ve had some students complete our course in as little as a week and go on to get certified (CPhT). That’s not the norm though. Most students complete their studies with our course, earning their certification in 8-10 weeks. That’s studying a few hours a day, a few days a week.

With a self-paced course it really depends on the student. Their level of education, their experience with healthcare/pharmacy. Our students are mostly individuals that are seeking certification to qualify for jobs without any pharmacy experience at all. Since 2014, we’ve helped thousands of students from all walks of life earn their certification!
