Louisiana Pharmacy Tech Requirements

Louisiana is one of the many states that require that you have a Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) Certified before gaining a license to work as a Certified Pharmacy Technician. Louisiana is one of the only states that require that you have 600 hours of practical experience in a pharmacy prior to submitting your application to the Louisiana Board of Pharmacy.
Louisiana Pharmacy Technician Average Salary: $16.75/hr
Louisiana State Specific Requirements:
- You must be at least 18 years old
- You must have a high school diploma or GED
- You must be of good moral character
- Submit an application with the following:
- Proof of PTCB Certification
- A one-time registration fee of $100, and a Criminal Background Check Fee of $42.50
- A 2×2 “passport-style” photo
- A Pharmacist affidavit that you have completed at least 600 hours of practical experience
- Renew license by June 30th of each year (regardless of the date issued) with a fee of $50. Louisiana levies a major penalty for those that don’t recertify on time, a $275 late fee!
- Louisiana also requires that Technicians earn 10 Technician Specific Continuing Education (CE) Hours each year
Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) Requirements:
- You must have not been convicted of any felonies or drug related misdemeanors
- Study for the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE)
- Complete the application process at PTCB.org and include, as part of the application process, pay the exam fee of $129
Pharmacy Technician Certification Board Continuing Education Requirements:
- Obtain 20 hours of Continuing Education (CE) during 2 year re-certification cycle
- 1 hour must be in Pharmacy Law, 1 hour must be in Patient Safety
- All Continuing Education must be Tech-Specific
- The PTCB Re-certification Fee is $40 and is payable to the PTCB every 2 years
