As RxTechExam continues celebrating 15 years of pharmacy technician education, workforce development, and professional growth, we are honored to highlight another inspiring career journey that demonstrates just how far a pharmacy career can take you.
This week, we feature pharmacist and entrepreneur Dr. Sarah Smith, PharmD, BCPS, MBA.
Dr. Smith is the CEO & Founder of Pharmacy Essential. Her story is a powerful reminder that careers do not always follow a straight line. Sometimes they begin with a simple desire to help others and evolve into opportunities to transform an entire profession.
Every Journey Starts Somewhere
Today, Sarah serves as a clinical pharmacist and is launched her own pharmacy technician training company. But her story did not begin there. Like many pharmacy professionals, she started as a pharmacy technician. She then became a Certified Pharmacy Technician, advanced to a pharmacy intern role while attending pharmacy school, became a pharmacy manager, transitioned into clinical practice, and now is pursuing another chapter of her career as an entrepreneur!
Her journey demonstrates an important truth: The pharmacy technician role is not simply a job. It can be the foundation for a lifetime of professional growth, leadership, innovation, and impact.
Seeing Problems as Opportunities
Many entrepreneurs begin by identifying a problem they want to solve. Throughout her career, Sarah noticed a recurring challenge. Patients often struggled to understand their medications, leading to confusion and frustration during difficult moments in their healthcare journeys. At the same time, she observed pharmacy teams facing onboarding challenges and gaps between classroom learning and real-world practice.
Rather than simply accepting those challenges, she asked a powerful question: “How can we make this better?”
That question ultimately led to the creation of her pharmacy technician training company, designed to bridge the gap between didactic education and hands-on experience.
Her mission is simple: Prepare pharmacy technicians to enter the workforce with greater confidence, stronger skills, and a deeper understanding of pharmacy practice while improving patient safety.
The Entrepreneurial Spirit in Pharmacy
When people think of entrepreneurship, they often think of technology startups or business ventures. But entrepreneurship exists throughout healthcare. Entrepreneurs identify needs. They create solutions. They improve systems. They help people.
The pharmacy profession needs innovators who are willing to challenge existing processes and build better pathways for learners, patients, and healthcare teams.
Sarah’s journey reminds us that entrepreneurship is not limited to business ownership. It begins with curiosity, leadership, and a commitment to making a difference.
Advice for Future Pharmacy Professionals
When asked what advice she would give someone just starting their pharmacy technician journey, Sarah’s response was refreshingly simple: Ask questions. Don’t be afraid to admit when you don’t know something. Take every opportunity to learn. Follow your interests. Grow at a pace that allows you to learn safely and confidently.
Perhaps most importantly, she reminds us that pharmacy offers far more opportunities than many people initially realize.
Community pharmacy. Hospital pharmacy. Clinical practice. Specialty pharmacy. Automation. Nuclear pharmacy. Education. Leadership. Entrepreneurship!
The possibilities are far greater than most learners imagine when they begin.
Why Stories Like Sarah’s Matter
At RxTechExam, we believe career stories are one of the most powerful tools for inspiring the next generation of pharmacy professionals. Students often enroll in a pharmacy technician training program with a single goal: Get certified.
But certification is not the destination. It is often the beginning. The pharmacy profession continues offering opportunities for advancement, leadership, specialization, education, advocacy, and innovation.
Sarah’s story demonstrates that today’s technician trainee may become tomorrow’s pharmacist, educator, executive, entrepreneur, or industry leader. Listen to her Vocal Video and get inspired!
Building Bright Futures
As we celebrate 15 years of supporting pharmacy technicians, we remain committed to highlighting the individuals who continue strengthening our profession through service, leadership, education, and innovation.
Sarah Smith’s journey reminds us that success is not defined by a title. It is defined by the impact we create, the people we serve, and the opportunities we create for others. And sometimes, all it takes is one pharmacy technician trainee willing to ask questions, follow their passion, and build something bigger than themselves.
Thank you, Dr. Sarah Smith, for inspiring our profession and helping shape the future of pharmacy.
Wishing you success,
Dr. Abel Guevara III. CPhTAdv
