Major Updates from the Pennsylvania Board of Pharmacy
The Pennsylvania Board of Pharmacy is currently revising requirements for Pharmacy Technician registration and licensure. As of May 2024, there is no recognition of Pharmacy Technicians in the state of Pennsylvania. Some caveat – Pharmacy Technicians are authorized to immunize, and legislation requiring licensure and registration has been pending since December of 2020.
As of May 1st, 2024 – The IRRC has requested more information about the implementation process, and final-form regulation.
As of March 2nd, 2024 – The Pennsylvania Board of Pharmacy proposed board approval for PTCB-Recognized Programs as well as other entities. The public comment period has ended.
Pending Pennsylvania State Specific Requirements:
An applicant for a pharmacy technician registration shall meet all of the following requirements:
(1) Be at least 17 years of age.
(2) Possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
(3) Complete a Board-approved pharmacy technician training program, based on the pending legislation: our courses would qualify.
(4) Submit to a criminal history record check.
PA Pharmacy Technician Average Salary: $17.75
Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) Requirements:
- You must have not been convicted of any felonies or drug related misdemeanors
- Study for the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE)
- Complete the application process at PTCB.org and include, as part of the application process, pay the exam fee of $129
PTCB Continuing Education Requirements:
- Obtain 20 hours of Continuing Education (CE) during 2 year re-certification cycle
- 1 hour must be in Pharmacy Law, 1 hour must be in Patient Safety
- All Continuing Education must be Tech-Specific
- The PTCB Re-certification Fee is $40 and is payable to the PTCB every 2 years
- RxTechExam students receive FREE CE’s through the National Pharmacy Technician Association
