Josie began her pharmacy journey while working as a clerk. She focused on delivering excellent customer service, helping patients, and supporting the pharmacy team. Her previous experience as a certified nursing assistant and medication aide had already given her knowledge of medication administration, common therapies, and patient safety.
A pharmacist recognized Josie’s medication knowledge, attention to detail, and natural ability to connect with patients. That pharmacist encouraged her to consider becoming a pharmacy technician.
Sometimes, one person recognizing our potential can change the direction of our lives.
The opportunity allowed Josie to combine her healthcare experience with her interest in medications and patient care. As a pharmacy technician, she continued developing the accuracy, organization, and clinical awareness required to support safe medication use and positive patient outcomes.
Her journey also illustrates why mentorship matters. Pharmacy leaders who take the time to recognize talent, provide encouragement, and open doors can influence an individual’s entire career.
Building a Career Through Lifelong Learning
Josie’s advancement did not happen by accident. It was built through curiosity, continuing education, professional credentials, formal education, and a willingness to accept new challenges.
As healthcare and technology continued to evolve, Josie made professional development a priority. She pursued learning through continuing education, vendor training, professional conferences, certifications, and certificate programs. She also completed associate and bachelor’s degree programs and is currently pursuing a Master of Healthcare Administration.
Every educational experience added something valuable to her professional foundation. Her studies strengthened not only her technical and clinical knowledge, but also her critical thinking, communication, leadership, operational, and strategic skills.
Josie’s credentials tell an important story. Her RPhTech, CPhT-Adv, CSPT, and CHW designations reflect expertise across pharmacy practice, advanced technician responsibilities, sterile preparation, and community health. Her pursuit of an MHA demonstrates her continued commitment to understanding healthcare leadership, operations, and organizational management.
The goal is not simply to collect letters after one’s name. The goal is to build knowledge with purpose. Josie has created a professional pathway that connects pharmacy, patient care, technology, operations, and leadership.
Today, she applies her clinical and technical expertise as a Clinical Applications Support Analyst at Sanford Health, supporting healthcare teams and helping improve patient care outcomes.
The Power of Mentorship
Josie openly credits mentors for helping her recognize opportunities she might not have pursued independently. Advice for the Next Generation

Pharmacy is always changing. Medications, regulations, technology, workflows, and best practices continue to evolve. Technicians must remain willing to ask questions, pursue learning opportunities, and stay current throughout their careers.
She also emphasizes the importance of accuracy and attention to detail. Pharmacy technicians play a critical role in medication safety, and seemingly small details can have a significant effect on patient outcomes. Organization, careful review, and the willingness to double-check one’s work are not signs of uncertainty. They are marks of professionalism.
Josie also encourages technicians to seek mentors and learn from experienced pharmacists, technicians, and other healthcare professionals. Some of the most valuable career lessons are learned from people who are willing to share their knowledge, provide honest guidance, and challenge us to grow.
