Introduction to Pharmacy
In this chapter we will discuss what pharmacy is, the different types of pharmacies and pharmacy personnel, the roles of pharmacy personnel, qualities of successful pharmacy technicians, and the basic principles of becoming a pharmacy technician.
Medical Terminology
The Medical Terminology chapter will set you up with the foundation to speak the pharmacy “language”. To become certified as a pharmacy technician you are responsible for memorizing the Top 200 Medications that are dispensed each year, including their brand name, generic name, medication class, and DEA schedule.
Health Sciences
The Health Sciences chapter will focus on the body and how the body uses medications to achieve their desired effect. During this chapter you will learn about anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, pharmaceutics, and pharmacokinetics while building upon the concepts and medications you learned about in Medical Terminology.
Preparing Prescriptions
Now that we know all about the body and the medications that we use, we will learn about how to prepare prescriptions. This chapter will cover interpreting, preparing, and dispensing prescriptions. This chapter will also cover pharmacy benefits management, sometimes known as insurance billing.
Pharmacy Calculations
This chapter will cover pharmacy calculations. This includes all of the calculations that you may use as a pharmacy technician, including those on the PTCE!
Patient Care Process
This chapter will discuss a concept called the “Pharmacists’ Patient Care Process”, and your role in that process.
Inventory Management
Part of your role as a pharmacy technician will be to help handle inventory.
This chapter will focus on the handling of pharmacy inventory, including medication ordering, returns, and recalls.
Compounding
The compounding chapter is going to introduce you to the process of creating custom medications for patients. You will learn about sterile and non-sterile compounding, including common equipment and techniques.
Regulations
The regulations chapter will solidify the information you’ve learned thus far while also reminding you of the workplace safety and regulatory pieces that contribute to your career. We will discuss common pharmacy organizations and laws, as well as how to get you both certified and licensed as a pharmacy technician!
By completing the required modules and passing the Final Course Exam with a score of 80% or above, you will receive the Certification of Completion necessary to sit for the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam.
